Are there alternative screening methods?

If you opt out of the security scanner, our staff will carry out an enhanced hand-search in a private area that may involve the loosening and/or removal of clothing. The Department for Transport considers that this method offers the same level of security assurance as a walk-through scanner.

I have a cochlear implant, am I ok to go through the x-ray machines?

Metal detectors and security scanners should not damage the implant or sound processor. However, when passing through security metal detectors and scanners the alarm may activate. If the alarm is activated, security may then use a handheld wand to screen you. The wand will not harm your cochlear implant, but it will beep when it passes over your sound processor. It is a good idea to let security staff know that you have an implanted medical device for hearing and carry your 'Patient Identification Card'.

You may hear a distorted sound caused by the magnetic field around the security scanner door or hand-held scanning wand. Turning the sound processor volume down (or switching it off) before passing through security screening will ensure that those sounds, if they occur, are not too loud or uncomfortable.

I'm travelling with a young child. What liquid restrictions apply?

It’s no problem to carry sufficient baby food, baby milk, juice and sterilised water for your flight. We understand how important it is to be able to cater for your little ones on the go.

To help things go smoothly at Security, make sure that any water is in a bottle specifically designed for feeding your child.

And please try to keep liquids to under 100ml.

If you can’t, Security staff might need to open the containers and screen the liquids at the security point.

Further information can be found here.

Is my privacy protected using a Security Scanner?

Yes. LLA Security Scanners use Automatic Threat Recognition software. This means that the scan doesn’t create an image of your body, and none of the data is saved.

Our vetted and trained security staff may view the images. You may also see your image. All images are deleted immediately after analysis and cannot be recovered.

You can also request that your image is viewed by a security officer of the same gender.

Is the scanner safe to use?

Yes, Security Scanners are safe to use. Studies have found they have no known health effects. They use millimetre wave technology, which emits a very low-power non-ionising form of electromagnetic radiation.

Security Scanners emit less radiation than exposure limits set by the European Commission. In fact, the amount is many times lower than the electromagnetic radiation emitted by a mobile phone!

Medical Implants

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) have stated that Security Scanners are also safe for people with medical implants. The MHRA “are not aware of any evidence of interference problems between airport security body scanners and implanted electronic medical devices”. The MHRA advises “If you have an implanted pacemaker, ICD or neurostimulator you can use airport security body scanners.’’
For further information relating to your own specific implanted device, please contact your local cardiac centre, doctor, or the manufacturer of your device.

Why do you use Security Scanners?

Security Scanners are required at all airports in line with Department for Transport and CAA regulations. They are used to locate objects concealed under clothing, and are quicker and less intrusive than hand searches. A hand search will only take place if the scanner identifies areas that need further investigation. If you are selected for a hand search, our Security Officers will assist you.

Can I take medication in my hand luggage?

Yes of course – don’t worry. But, we do ask that it’s properly marked with a professionally printed label identifying the medication and manufacturer's name or pharmaceutical label.

If you’re an asthmatic, you can carry inhalers sufficient for your flight time, but spare canisters must be packed in your hold luggage.

If you’re diabetic, you can carry the insulin and needles necessary for your trip.

If you suffer from severe allergic reactions, you can carry your EpiPen with you.

If you’re taking homeopathic medication in liquid form, you can carry essential medicines with you. They will be subject to X-ray screening which doesn't compromise the effectiveness of medicines in any way. You can take up to a maximum of 100ml in a resealable clear plastic bag with any other liquids you’re carrying. If the container is larger than 100ml, it should be presented at security for inspection. There is no limit on the amount, however you may be asked to verify the liquid by tasting, or provide verification such as a practitioner's letter.

If you need to take water with your medication, you can carry some through security providing the bottle is no bigger than 100ml. This bottle should be placed in a resealable transparent plastic bag.

London Luton Airport do provide drinking water. Drinking water is located just past security search at the base of the lifts / escalators, or all restaurants can provide drinking water upon request. Empty bottles can be refilled at these locations too.

Alternatively, you can buy bottled water in the Departures area and there’s no restriction on the quantity you can take on the aircraft.
